About Special Issues
Special Issue is a collection of articles that concentrates on a topical research area within the scope of a journal. Special Issues normally revolve around a trending topic, highlight important subdisciplines, or describe new cross-disciplinary applications. However, they can also cover a conference, scientific meeting or symposium, mark a moment in history like a journal anniversary or celebrate the impact of a prominent figure in a field.
All Special Issues are reviewed by dedicated content teams and journal Editors prior to launch. Special Issue articles follow the same peer review process as other articles published in the journal and all papers must be peer reviewed before they are published.
The following sections provide guidance on Proposing a Special Issue, explain the responsibilities of running a Special Issue as a Guest Editor, and the benefits of submitting your manuscript to a Special Issue as an author.
Benefits of being a Guest Editor
There are many benefits to acting as a Guest Editor for a Special Issue:
- Drive the advancement of quality research in an area of merging importance within your area of research
- Improve your academic profile and increase your influence and impact in the research community
- Expand your network and continue to build connections with peers from your field on a global scale
- Be at the forefront of scientific communication
- Be recognized by promotion evaluation committees and amongst your peers
As a Lead Guest Editor, you’ll also gain valuable editorial experience by exerting creativity in the inception and development of a topic, assembling, and working with a strong team of Editors and handling manuscripts close to your professional interests.
Timeline of a Special Issue
The entire process from having a Special Issue proposal accepted to publication of the Special Issue typically takes a minimum of eight to twelve months. We normally recommend giving authors around three to five months to write and submit their papers, around three to six months for peer review and submissions of revisions, and another two months or so for production and issue compilation.
